The Conference Board's

18th Annual Executive Coaching Conference

AN ECC PANEL DISCUSSION

with ECC Executive Partners and Coaches:

Kathryn Hayley | Keith Johnson | Karen May | Dr. Louise Korver

In this enlightened discussion, Kathryn, Keith, Karen, and Louise cover 3 critical areas in terms of what's new and what's different in C-Suite Executive Coaching for 2021.

Key topics include:

1. Prioritizing and balancing external and internal forces;

2. Adding the What to the How; and,

3. Navigating new pressures - including personal exhaustion, solidifying relationships virtually, leading beyond the business in political, social, and environmental issues.

We invite you to listen to the conversation (28 minutes running time) and check out the Executive Summary Overview below:

Executive Summary Overview

PRIORITIZING AND BALANCING EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES

KEITH JOHNSON

This time of existential challenge requires very different skill sets

• External – industry, consumer behaviors, political, social, global

• Internal – rethinking teams, culture, organizations, business models

• Many leaders excel in one or the other, but certainly have not been challenged to face both at the same time to this extent

Impact to executive coaching to support and help navigate

• Requires out-of-the-box strategic thinking where an Executive Partner/ mentor can help sharpen thinking in a safe and trusted space

• Leaders must dig deep to their internal depths, where an Executive Coach can help

KATHRYN HAYLEY

Three areas to better prepare leadership:

1. Succession Planning

• Baby boomers are retiring. Attention must now be to determine how to hand over the reins to the next generation leaders and how to prepare them for the role.

2. Preparing the Organization

• Surround leader with the right people

• Right mindset of people who may have been considered

3. Digital Disruption

• Industries are being disrupted, and this has been encouraged by the pandemic. Many industries have had to quickly shift.

• Preparing organizations for digitization will be key

ADDING THE WHAT TO THE HOW

KAREN MAY

HOW - the ability to lead and leadership style

WHAT - how the world has changed and still is changing and what expertise is needed to lead the business

Coaching must now support:

• Defining their WHAT to re-imagine their business and take their team with them; identify what new skills; train/develop/recruit

• Coaching must now be more targeted, precise, and tailored

• Outcomes are bigger than before – not just behaviors

Impact to executive coaching to support and help navigate

• Coach/mentor provides a safe space to reimagine

• Acute understanding of individuals’ behaviors in times of stress and demonstrating vulnerability, transparency and building trust with teams who are also experiencing the same fears

• Mentor/Executive Partner adds insight from experience - subject matter expert

KEITH JOHNSON

PACE: This now must happen all with astonishing speed…

ISOLATION: Without many of the traditional supports for leaders

TOP 3 CHALLENGES FOR THOSE PREPARING FOR AND NEWER TO C-SUITE ROLES

KATHRYN HAYLEY

1. Constant change and uncertainty leads to personal exhaustion

• Whole person coaching and the need to reenergize

2. Virtual work environment creates an inability to build and solidify relationships

• Isolation that impacts trust and connection

• CEO & Board relationships when you can’t see the Board

• Team support/motivation when you can’t physically interact as a team

3. Pressure to lead beyond the business

• Taking stands on non-business issues (political, social, environmental) & understanding implications is unchartered territory

• High sensitivity to diversity, inclusion, and social issues’ engagement with serious measurements

WRAP UP: TOP TAKEAWAYS

KATHRYN HAYLEY

My work as an ECC Executive Partner provides the additional support and perspective of having sat in the chair to help leaders lead more strategically and more effectively.

KEITH JOHNSON

Now more than ever, senior leaders need a safe space, a sounding board to provide support when the stakes are so high and time is of the essence.

KAREN MAY

There is no longer a slow build. Coaching is more important than ever, but it must be with a tailored, targeted, and precise approach for quicker impact.
